Sucrose Metabolism and Growth in Transplanted Loblolly Pine Seedlings

چکیده
Loblolly pine (Pinus taedu L.) seedling height, root collar diameter (RCD) and the specific activities of three sucrose metabolizing enzymes, namely, sucrose spthase (SS), acid invertase, and neutral invertase, were measured to assess seedling responses to transplant stress. Bare-root nursery-grown loblolly pine seedlings were lifted and transplanted immediately into nearby nursery beds in February 199 1. It was found that transplanted seedlings grew less in height and RCD and had lower SS activity than nontransplanted controls during the first 7 months after transplanting. However, the seasonal patterns for seedling growth and SS activity were not changed by transplanting. Stems, with SS as the dominant sucrose metabolizing activity, were a stronger growth sink than taproots between spring aridearly fall. Taproot SS activity decreased from spring to summer and increased again in late summer. Toward late fall when terminal buds were set and RCD growth stopped, taproot became a dominant growth sink. It was concluded that i) SS was the dominant enzyme for sucrose metabolism in actively growing pine stems and. taproots; ii) there were decreases in seedling growth and SS activity in transplanted seedlings as compared with nontransplanted controls; and iii) SS can be used as a biochemical indicator for growth sink strength and for stress caused by transplanting. ,

A. Biochemical Assessment of the Value of Top Clipping Nursery-Grown Loblolly Pine Seedlings’ Z&i-Jean
Seasonal sucrose metabolism (sucrolysis) was studied in taproot cambial tissues of nursery-grown loblolly pine seedlings to assess the value of top clipping. In sucrose-importing taproots of nonclipped seedlings, sucrose synthase (SS) was the dominant enzyme for sucroti cleavage, and its activity exhibited a distinct seasonal activity. Both root SS activity and growth were most active during fa...

Loblolly pine (Pin1r.s tae(/(i L.) seedlings were grown in co~npetition with native weeds using soil and seed bank collected from recently chopped and burned areas near Appornattox, Virginia. One-year-old seedlings were planted and weeds allowed to germinate from the native seed bank while being exposed to COz (ambient and elevated approximately 700 ppm) and water (water stressed and well water...
متن کاملEffects of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria on Loblolly and Slash Pine Seedlings
Loblolly and slash pine seed were inoculated at sowing with 1 of 12 different strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the greenhouse. Time to germination and seedling densities were determined at 21 days, and seedling biomass was measured at 12 wk after sowing. All bacterial strains significantly increased the speed of seedling emergence over nontreated pine seed. By 12 wk, ho...
متن کاملThe Nature of Waterlogging Tolerance of Loblolly Pine
--Loblolly pine seedlings develop many responses under waterlogging stress that are similar to adaptations to waterlogging in other higher plants. Some of the responses of loblolly pine seem to be less specialized than those exhibited by true wetland species. Lack of specialization is some cases seems to account for growth differences in relation to soil nutrient level and length and type of wa...
